Photo Tour in Morocco
Day 1 – Casablanca to Rabat
Arrive at any time of the day at Casablanca airport. Transfer by your driver and guide to Rabat. Early arrivals will have tea at the historic riverside of Kasbah des Oudayas, soaking in the view and ancient Almohad architecture, the charming boulevard and beach, and the famous Tour Hassan and Mausoleum of Mohammad V. Later arrivals will join us for dinner. Because our Morocco photography trips are specifically designed to optimize the photographic experience, we will generally be out photographing around sunset, so as to enjoy the best lighting. For the duration of the trip, dinner will be either before or after dark.
Day 2 – Rabat to Chefchaouen
Drive from Rabat to Chefchaouen, the Blue City in the northern Rif Mountains of Morocco. This charming little town is known for its blue houses and little windy streets of its ancient medina. The relaxed atmosphere will welcome you while you explore the city and small waterfalls near the edge of the town.
Day 3 – Chefchaouen
Enjoy a day in Chefchaouen. Go for a small hike in the morning in the Rifian hills around the town, and relax near the Spanish Mosque overlooking the city, as you watch the sunset changing Chefchaouen in different rays of blue.
Photo assignment of the day: On several days of our photography trip you will be presented with a optional fun photography assignment, and at the end of that day, time allowing, we will share and review each submission. Today it’s all about color, specifics will be provided on the day.
Day 4 – Chefchaouen to Fes
Travel from Chefchaouen to Fes, via Meknes and Volubilis. Visit of the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the holy village of Moulay Idriss. You wil continue to the imperial city of Meknes, where you will visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and the old medina. Focus on the technique of outdoor photography, as you will learn more of the magnificent history of these places. Arrive in Fes in the late afternoon.
Day 5 – Fes
City tour of Fes. Your guide will take you through its bustling little streets and alleyways, through the famous leather tanneries and next to the al-Qarawiyyin mosque. The medina is pulsing of history and culture, and you will love it to photograph the hustle and bustle of Fes’s city life.
Photo assignment of the day: We will focus on photographing local artisans and craftsmen as the souks of Fes allow you stunning visuals.
Day 6 – Fes to Merzouga
Merzouga is today’s destination. At the edge of the vast Sahara desert, Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi region offers spectacular high sand dunes and a fascinating natural landscape. You will travel via the Middle Atlas mountains, where you learn more about Berber culture, before arriving at the dunes.
Day 7 – Merzouga
Listen to the sounds of the Sahara as you will visit a local Gnaoua family, who play the southern vibes of Gnaoua music. We will learn more about the techniques of photographing moving scenes as the Gnaoua musicians tell you all about their history and music. In the afternoon, hop on the camel for a camel trek in the Erg Chebbi dunes. Watch the sun set from atop of the dunes and enjoy a desert night with music and camp fire in the desert camp.
Day 8 – Merzouga to Zagora
Leave the Sahara for Zagora, a southern oasis town with an old city centre filled with crumbling Kasbahs and fertile plots of farmland between the date palms.
Photo assignment of the day: You will spend time with a family in the village to learn about and document their daily life, as well as connect with the many kids who will want their photo taken. But it’s not just ‘taking’ photos. In the late afternoon we’ll edit and print our favorite photos, and time permitting, we will go back to our host family’s house to give them copies of the photos as a much appreciated gift.
Day 9 – Zagora to Taroudant
Travel more west from Zagora up the Draa valley and on to Taroudant, via a remote region between the Anti Atlas and High Atlas Mountains. We will arrive in ‘Little Marrakech’ in the early evening.
Day 10 – Taroudant to Essaouira
Drive via Agadir and the scenic coastal route to Essaouira. We arrive in Essaouira in the afternoon. This charming fishermen’s town is known for its relaxed atmosphere and artistic vibes. Wander through the old medina and learn more about Essaouira’s fascinating history.
Day 11 – Essaouira
Early rise and shine today! You will visit the local harbor early in the morning with sunrise, and see the fishermen come in with their small blue boats. Enjoy the bustling local fish market and enjoy fresh seafood as we will choose our own lunch and have it prepared on the charcoal. Visit the Skala ramparts around sunset, the best time of the day in Essaouira.
Day 12 – Essaouira to Marrakech
Leave the coast for the Red City: Marrakech! Enjoy the afternoon in Jardin Majorelle, and meet with your guide before sunset to witness Jemaa el-Fna square change into whirlwind of people and rhythmic drumming sounds.
Day 13 – Marrakech
Explore more of Marrakech today! Your city guide will take you to Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the old Jewish quarter or Mellah, and Koutoubia mosque. Cross Jemaa el-Fna to discover the medina and its many souks, visit the Quranic school of Ben Youssef and the excellent photography museum of La Maison de la Photographie, housing a great collection of photos on Morocco from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Day 14 – Marrakech
Departure day! Leave at any time of the day. Your driver will bring you to the airport of Marrakech.
