12 Moroccan Destinations in 12 Months
(This post is another in our series of guest advice presented by previous guests)
Morocco is located in the most northerly part of Africa, less than 16 kilometers from Spain and Europe, and enjoys an idyllic climate all year round. The daytime temperatures during the summer can sometimes reach more than 40 degrees, and it is a very dry climate, so it is nothing too unpleasant. In winter, daytime temperatures rarely drop below 20 degrees. The nights, in general, are mild and provide a good night’s sleep without air conditioning. There are few countries where you can experience such consistent seasonal temperatures all year long.
A strategic location!
Its location on the northwest coast of Africa allows you to enjoy the benefits of the Mediterranean Sea to the north and Atlantic beaches to the west. To the north and east of the city of Tangier, you will discover the mountain range of Rif – a true refuge for Berbers for 1,000 years. Just below the Rif Mountains is the ancient capital of Morocco – Fez. The Medina of Fez is a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for tanning leather and its skilled craftsmen. Located further south, you arrive in the city of Meknes, now famous for producing wine (strangely, Morocco, which is a Muslim country, makes very good wine). Further south and on the Atlantic coast is the capital of Morocco – Rabat – which combines the features of a modern capital with those of a historic city. Further south on the Atlantic coast, you arrive at the gates of the famous city of Casablanca – the most populated city in Morocco and one of the most economically important cities in Africa.
Atlantic coast
On the Atlantic coast, you will find many charming cities like Essaouira, Oualidia, and El Jadida, with their fantastic beaches that are worth a visit. Further south and inland, you arrive in Marrakech – the largest tourist destination in Morocco (Morocco received 14 million tourists in 2014). The 5-star hotels are located next to beautiful villas or riads in the medina. The High Atlas Mountains are only 32 km south of the city, offering fabulous walks, camel rides, and even winter skiing. Marrakech has recently become a major destination for golfers with more than 15 golf courses. Heading towards the Atlas, you approach the desert – a trip to the desert is usually via Ouarzazate, Zagora, or Merzouga. Agadir, located on the southern coast of the Atlas Mountains, offers a mild climate like the rest of Morocco, but unlike Marrakech, it is less hot in summer and warmer in winter. Unfortunately, an earthquake in 1960 destroyed much of the city, and the reconstructions have not always been in good taste. It is now the largest seaside resort in Morocco.
Low-cost flights
Low-cost flights in the 1990s largely contributed to the increase in the number of tourists traveling to Morocco. Tourists come from all over the world, but the French and British are the most present. People of all ages come to either relax and enjoy a steam room or spa, go for a walk in the mountains, play golf, or hunt for treasures in the picturesque medinas and taste the flavors of Africa.
There are beautiful villas to buy or rent from the north to the south of Morocco, but it is in Marrakech that we find the most exceptional villas with very large gardens, swimming pools, and staff to take care of all your needs. These villas are easily accessible by car and close to the city center, where you can have lunch at La Mamounia or stroll through the souks to discover the famous babouches, Kaftans, djellabas, carpets, and a multitude of other items that will delight your friends and family. You can also get away in the morning to the coast or the mountains and return the same evening.
For further exploration
The most beautiful cities of Morocco seem to be the royal cities, but this opinion remains subjective because each of them has an undeniable charm.
Fes
Fes is an exceptionally specific city in terms of its history, landmarks, university, and tanneries. When visiting Morocco, do not miss this beautiful royal city. When you get near the tanneries, some merchants offer mint, and it is better to take it. Indeed, the smell can be quite strong due to the animal skins, so it is advisable to make a ball of fresh mint and place it in your nose to avoid discomfort. Fes is also home to the oldest medina in the Arab world in the Maghreb.
Meknes
Meknes is also one of the most beautiful imperial cities of Morocco. Its fortifications are extraordinary. It boasts an impressive number of palaces, fountains, gardens, and mosques. Built by Moulay Ismail, a contemporary of Louis XIV, this city is a masterpiece of Maghreb architecture.
Marrakech and Rabat
Marrakech and Rabat are also among the most beautiful cities in Morocco. Everyone knows Marrakech and its famous Jemma el-Fna square, but the city also houses the Saadian tombs of princes and princesses from the golden age of the country. The ramparts of the medina stretch for 14 km. Rabat is also worth visiting. Although this city is more modern than the other imperial cities, its center is full of priceless treasures. Rabat is world-famous as the capital of Morocco and even more so for its famous Hassan II Tower.
The most beautiful cultural cities
Marrakech tops the list of the most beautiful Moroccan cities in the cultural category. The best connected to Europe, it offers visits to stunning palaces and is also accommodating to various budgets in terms of supply and demand. Choosing Marrakech ensures you can explore every corner and do so on a reasonable budget. Meknes comes in second place, with its imperial past and many historical remnants to admire. The Mausoleum of the Sultan is also worth a visit, with its courtyard and beautiful gardens. History lovers and those who appreciate ancient architecture will be delighted! Fez is the third most popular destination among travelers interested in Moroccan culture. This city is often considered the cultural capital of the country. You will discover a fortified medina with unique medieval architecture. Even the local schools feature intricate sculptures and decorations. Nicknamed the Mecca of the West, it is also regarded as the gastronomic capital of the country, where you can enjoy many local and traditional specialties.

What you need to know
Formalities: A passport is required to travel to Morocco. If you are traveling with your children or traveling alone, additional documents may be required.
Climate: Spring and autumn are the best times to visit Morocco! We were there in late May—few tourists, and the heat was manageable!
Health: No particular risks; Morocco does not have an unhealthy climate. Nevertheless, in many places, there is poor hygiene and a lack of clean water. So be cautious about waterborne diseases and poorly washed or undercooked foods.
Some final advice
Morocco will remain a wonderful memory. In the following articles, you will discover some amazing encounters, like the one with Amar in the dunes of Merzouga. The attention from men can sometimes be intense for women, but you get used to it. Moroccans are incredibly warm and friendly, so don't hesitate to engage with them, take an interest in their customs, and speak to them using the few Arabic words you know—they will love it and laugh at our beautiful accents!
In your backpack
Sunscreen (the Moroccan sun is strong!), along with clothing suitable for the region you’re visiting (mountain/sea), but most importantly, clothing that respects the traditions of the country. In less touristy areas, it is better to cover most of your body (except the face), so plan on loose pants, long skirts, and light blouses. Don’t forget to bring a small vest or fleece for the evenings, as the nights can be quite cool, especially in the desert!
