ITINERARY BREAKDOWN

Morning — Marrakesh Departure & the Tizi n'Tichka Pass

Your private day trip begins with a comfortable hotel pick-up in Marrakesh, before heading south on one of the most scenic mountain drives in North Africa. The road climbs steadily through the High Atlas Mountains toward the Tizi n'Tichka Pass at 2,260 metres  a breathtaking crossing of switchbacks and panoramic ridge views that is an experience in itself. Along the way, stop to photograph traditional Amazigh Berber villages perched on hillsides, roadside fossil and mineral stalls, and the dramatic interplay of ochre rock and snow-capped peaks that defines this extraordinary landscape.

The drive from Marrakesh to Ait Ben Haddou takes approximately 3-4 hours  a journey that transitions from the bustle of the city to the vast, cinematic silence of the pre-Saharan south.

Midday — The Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou

Arrive at the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou  a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most photographed and historically significant fortified villages in the world. Rising from the banks of the Ounila River against a backdrop of desert hills, this ancient ksar (fortified village) of sun-dried mud brick (pisé) has stood for centuries as a testament to southern Moroccan Amazigh architecture at its most dramatic.

Wander through the narrow lanes and layered kasbahs with your expert local guide, learning about the architectural ingenuity of its defensive towers, the families who still live within its ancient walls, and the history of a village that served as a vital stop on the great caravan routes between the Sahara and Marrakesh.

Ait Ben Haddou is also one of the world's most iconic film and television locations  its extraordinary landscape has served as the backdrop for productions including Gladiator, The Mummy, Prince of Persia, Babel, and most famously Game of Thrones, where it stood in for the city of Yunkai. For film lovers, walking these streets carries an additional layer of magic.

Lunch is taken at a local restaurant with panoramic views over the ksar  a moment to pause, eat well, and absorb the scale of what surrounds you.

Afternoon — Telouet Kasbah & Return to Marrakesh

On the return journey, make a stop at the Kasbah of Telouet  the birthplace and seat of power of Pacha Thami El Glaoui, the most powerful and controversial figure in 20th-century Moroccan political history. Once described as the Lord of the Atlas, El Glaoui ruled much of southern Morocco under French protectorate rule, and his Kasbah reflects both the extraordinary wealth he accumulated and the dramatic fall from grace that followed Moroccan independence in 1956.

The Kasbah's ornate reception halls  intricate painted ceilings, carved stucco, and zellige tilework  stand in striking contrast to its crumbling exterior, creating an atmosphere that is at once magnificent and melancholic. It is one of the most historically layered stops in all of Morocco, and one that few visitors who take the standard Ait Ben Haddou route ever discover.

To understand the full story of El Glaoui and the Atlas before you visit, we highly recommend reading "Lords of the Atlas" by Gavin Maxwell  one of the finest books ever written about Morocco, and essential preparation for this journey.

Your private driver returns you to your Marrakesh hotel by early evening, crossing back over the Tizi n'Tichka as the Atlas turns golden in the late afternoon light.

This tour is also available as part of our Marrakesh excursions collection.
